Significant Growth in the Tourism Sector
According to the Phu Quoc City People's Committee (Kien Giang Province), the city welcomed over 5.9 million visitors in 2024, a 7.1% increase compared to 2023, reaching 170.5% of the target. Among them, international arrivals nearly hit 1 million, marking a 73.4% rise. Total tourism revenue exceeded VND 21.17 trillion, surpassing the planned target by 24.5% and accounting for over 84% of the province’s total tourism revenue. The city aims to welcome 7 million visitors in 2025.
Experts attribute this success to multiple factors, including visa exemptions, government support, efforts from local authorities, and businesses' investments in infrastructure, services, and tourism products, as well as the expansion of international flight routes.
A Long-Term Development Strategy
Phu Quoc's selection as the host city for the APEC 2027 Summit underscores its potential to rise as a key regional hub. In recent years, the local government has implemented strategic initiatives to transform Phu Quoc into a city worth living in, visiting, and investing in.
Investment-friendly policies have attracted 321 projects with a total registered capital exceeding VND 412 trillion. Between 2011 and 2023, the tourism sector maintained an annual growth rate of 20-30%, with production value increasing six times faster than the national average.
Additionally, Phu Quoc continues to develop new tourism experiences that align with global trends while preserving its local cultural identity. It is the only island in the world to feature fireworks displays twice every night, making it a paradise for experiential festivals and performances. Notable events include Awaken Sea – The Ocean Awakens, Symphony of The Sea, a fusion of jet ski and flyboard performances with fireworks, the culturally rich Vietnamese Water Puppet Show, and Kiss of the Sea, which offers a fresh and captivating experience for visitors.
Entertainment options are also expanding, with attractions like Vui Fest Night Market, Sun Bavaria GaátroPu Craft Beer Restaurant, Phu Quoc Brew House, and Sun World Hon Thom featuring the world's longest three-cable car system.
Rapidly Improving Infrastructure
Phu Quoc is not only a top tourist destination but also an ideal place for investment and residence. To prepare for APEC 2027, the city is attracting public-private funding to accelerate the development of tourism and urban infrastructure. Major projects, such as the expansion of Phu Quoc International Airport and Phu Quoc International Cruise Port, are underway.
High-end mixed-use developments, including convention centers, international press centers, and five-star hotel chains, are gradually reshaping the city's landscape. The healthcare and education sectors are also receiving significant investments, with projects like Phu Quoc Sun Hospital, a public beach, and an international seaside square in Bai Dat Do, An Thoi, launched in late 2024.
In the near future, Phu Quoc will continue to make its mark with iconic developments, including Khát Vọng Tower—a sail-shaped landmark at Hon Thom, expected to attract millions of visitors each year.
With its breathtaking scenery ranked among the world’s top two most beautiful islands, comprehensive infrastructure development, favorable policies, and a series of iconic projects, Phu Quoc is on the brink of becoming a premier global destination, drawing tourism and real estate investors alike.
Associate Professor Dr. Pham Trung Luong, former Deputy Director of the Vietnam Institute for Tourism Development Research, remarked:
"From the time we planned Phu Quoc's tourism development 20 years ago, I have always believed that this island would reach international status and play a crucial role in Vietnam’s tourism and socio-economic growth."
